The Special Olympics function under a mission to, “provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.”

"Of all the causes we support, I think the Special Olympics may be one of the most incredible. It is so inspirational see how these athletes are empowered. What an opportunity. See the smiles on everyone's faces is amazing. I can't think of a better way to spend a morning,"

Dave Hastings, Founder

The Breakfast for Champions is held to honor this mission. It gathers together community leaders, Special Olympians, committee organizers, volunteers, local law enforcement officials, and prominent local business such as Hastings & Hastings and Parker & Sons, to raise support and awareness for what is universally regarded as an incredible cause.

On the morning of the Breakfast for Champions, those who gather enjoyed a delightful atmosphere, an incredible meal, and most importantly, heard from a host of powerful speakers. Those who spoke in front of the crowd at the Breakfast for Champions told of the impact the Special Olympics has had in their lives. They spoke of being empowered and enabled. They keynote speaker for the event was Loretta Claiborne. She is a marathon runner who has been a member of the Special Olympics for over two decades. In 1996 she won the Arthur Ashe ESPY courage award. Loretta was tragically born partially blind and was unable to walk until the age of four. Her athletic success has been immense. She has completed 25 marathons and has finished in the 100 at the Boston Marathon.

“Of all the causes we support, I think the Special Olympics may be one of the most incredible. It is so inspirational see how these athletes are empowered. What an opportunity. See the smiles on everyone’s faces is amazing. I can’t think of a better way to spend a morning,” said David Hastings, the founder of Hastings & Hastings.
