Hyderabad,India, July 14, 2014 (Newswire.com) - Data centers consume huge amount of power and lot of heat is generated from the systems, so there is a need to maintain servers in a data center at a threshold level for the optimal functioning of the server farm. Factors like PUE (Power Usage Efficiency) and CCF (Cooling Capacity Factor) are used in monitoring the energy efficiency and cooling capacity respectively in the data center.
Data center cooling which was generally based on CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioning) units has been considered effective but had inefficiencies like air stratification, re-circulation, and bypass air. Hence this chaos air distribution was replaced by the hot aisle-cold aisle strategy which was also slowly replaced by the containment cooling strategy. Traditional cooling systems like CRAH and CRAC are adequate for an overall cooling capacity of up to 10kW and in combination with exhaust ducting can be used for up to 15kW. This however creates hot spots and with increase in racks or servers per rack, the load and the amount of heat generated increases. Hence other strategies like air containment, closed loop cooling and free cooling and so on need to be deployed.

Recently, a new cooling technique has been introduced by 3M (a multinational conglomerate corporation) which could cut data center energy use by 95%. 3M isn’t alone in developing cooling techniques with companies like Coolcentric offering patented cooling technologies in the data center cooling space. Around $20 million has been raised by Rochester’s Liquid Cool Solutions for implementing its own electronic cooling equipment recently.
