Financial Education Benefits Center's Road Trip Series #1: Grocery Shopping Can Make or Break the Trip

Outdoor Traveling

Road trips just seem to work best during summer. Long days and plenty of sunshine lend themselves to long drives and far-off destinations. Whether a person is a road veteran with the stamina to drive 300 miles without stopping or a road newbie looking to develop a road-trip skill set, there are always new ideas to try and classic approaches to revamp. There is an artistry to road-trip strategy, as the right set of decisions can augment a trip with comfort while poor planning can create unforetold problems down the road. Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC), a membership benefits company, offers a roadside assistance benefit to its members to help them deal with any accident or delay on their road trip.

“Road trips can be a fun way to spend your time during summer, but they also take a lot of planning,” said Jennifer Martinez, manager at FEBC. “Like the boy scout motto says, ‘It’s best to be prepared.’” The level of security provided by a roadside assistance program is important, but other decisions will also help shape a road experience. One place to start is the grocery store.

A well-stocked cooler will go a long way towards budget and convenience. Make sure to have food high in protein; sandwiches or wraps are a good handheld way to get a balanced meal. Maybe make sure to bring utensils and paper goods, and maybe even try to get paper plates and towels that are recyclable or biodegradable, as they’re more eco-friendly. Be prepared to eat on the side of a road at a moment’s notice.

Overall, a well-planned shopping trip will make one's travels cheaper, more convenient and potentially more adventurous. With groceries and snacks in the car, a traveler, or travelers, will have less need to stop for food, allowing for more miles to be added to the odometer every day. FEBC members who yearn for road trips may find value in their benefits. They can access discounts on certain groceries and may be able to speak to certified medical professionals about healthy nutrition choices depending on their plan tier level. Most importantly, FEBC members have a roadside assistance benefit that can help them with many roadside worries.

“We want people to have fun with their summers,” Martinez continued, “and road trips are great for that. Just be careful, take precautions and don’t let one arm get sunburned through the window while the other arm gets no sun. It’s a bad look. And seriously look into roadside assistance. Needing it and not having it could be more than a speed bump on the road.”
