Financial Education Benefits Centers Encourages Nurse Well-Being for National Nurse Week

It’s National Nurse Week through May 12 and that means attention has turned to the healthcare industry, specifically to those in the largest healthcare occupation. Nurses should be health role models for patients, but they also have a hard time maintaining their own health. The Financial Education Benefits Center promotes a healthy lifestyle for all people and are turning their attention to focus on nurses, who influence so many people in their professional lives.

“We believe that if we can help nurses improve their own health, they will pass that on to their patients,” explains Jennifer Martinez, manager at the Financial Education Benefits Center. “Imagine how many people can benefit from encouragement to improve their overall health and wellness. A lot of people just need to know what tools they have at their disposal to take the first step.”

We believe that if we can help nurses improve their own health, they will pass that on to their patients.

Jennifer Martinez, Manager

It’s hard for any working person to be healthy, so it’s not that surprising that nurses, who focus on health in their profession, are not immune to those difficulties. According to an American Nurses Association (ANA) 2016 Health Risk Appraisal report, RNs and nursing students have an average BMI of 27.6, which is considered overweight; 12 percent have nodded off while driving; 84 percent don’t eat the recommended daily fruits and vegetables amounts; and less than half get recommended amounts of exercise.

Nurses have hectic and long workdays, so it’s no surprise that they have trouble finding time to get exercise. Additionally, they are often in stressful environments and lack easy access to healthy foods. All of this and more contribute to difficulty in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

“At FEBC we make it as easy as possible for our members to get the tools they need to live a healthy life,” says Martinez. “We know how hard it is to fit healthy habits into a busy schedule, so we provide it all in one place.”

ANA encourages nurses to care for their own health so they can better care for patients. They launched the Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation Grand Challenge to promote healthy lifestyles for nurses. HNHN focuses on five areas: physical activity, nutrition, rest, quality of life, and safety.

“FEBC offers benefits that align with the ANA’s focus areas,” explains Martinez. “Our members have access to workouts that fit into any schedule; they will get guidance on nutrition and diet; they will be able to improve their sleep and quality of life through mental exercises like meditation and mindfulness. It’s the full package.”

National Nurse Week has been an established time to celebrate and support people in the nursing profession for over 30 years. In 1974, the International Council of Nurses declared May 12, which is Florence Nightingale’s birthday, National Nurse Day. Soon after, President Nixon issued a proclamation designating the week leading up to May 12 National Nurse Week. Since then, countless organizations and political figures have further solidified May 6 through May 12 as a time to recognize nurses.

“We’re doing our part to recognize nurses — by showing them that their health is as important to us as their patients’ health is to them,” stated Martinez.
