Financial Education Benefits Center Supports the Mental Health of First Responders

Mental health is slowly overcoming the negative stigma associated with it. However, many still see mental illness as weakness, even though things like depression, anxiety, and even PTSD are common. Especially in professions that require an air of authority, mental illness often gets repressed. Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC), a membership benefits company specializing in health and financial benefits, urges everyone to talk about mental health and get treatment from a professional if they need to. The company offers members resources to do so.

“First responders, firefighters, and other public safety professionals experience things civilians don’t in their line of work, and it can affect their mental health,” said Jennifer Martinez, Manager at FEBC. “The first responders who helped Sonoma County fight the massive wildfires just a few months ago put their lives in danger for all of us. We at FEBC hope they tend to their own well-being as well as they fought for ours.”

Unfortunately, mental illness, especially traumatic stress, is common among first responders. However, they often find it difficult to seek help, sometimes believing they will be judged or labeled. Alternatively, they may worry about their authority if they were to talk openly about their mental health.

Firefighters, first responders, and police officers need to be authority figures to keep people safe. That air of authority may get in the way of their mental health, especially if they feel they must appear strong at all times. If they are not in top mental health, they may fear that others will see them as weak, which could prevent them from seeking help. Some counties are trying to reverse the stigma, encouraging individuals to talk with their peers about what they’re feeling. Therapy is often necessary to cope with PTSD and depression, but simply talking to others who understand can help.

While those professions are beginning to focus more on mental health, individuals should do what they need to do for their own mental health. FEBC members have access to certified mental health professionals to talk confidentially about their experiences. Those professionals may refer members to local professionals to provide ongoing support, at an additional cost.

“Mental health is important, especially for those we put so much trust in to keep us safe,” said Martinez. “At FEBC we recognize that to be our best selves, we must be in good physical and mental health. We hope our benefits help our members work toward their best selves in every way possible.”
