Financial Education Benefits Center: Staying Fit Without Slimming the Wallet

Man Working Out at Home

Staying fit doesn’t have to slim down the wallet. Working out at home saves all kinds of money. No fancy workout clothes, memberships or expensive equipment needed. And, with some inventiveness, a home gym can be built for little more than the time it takes to search at home, garage sales, second-hand stores and online classified websites. Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC), a company that provides a variety of member benefits including health and wellness resources, empowers its customer to live their best lives.

“Adding a low-cost home gym to our health education, healthy eating and fitness benefits is a great idea,” said Jennifer Martinez, manager at FEBC. “Our goal is for every one of our members to work, play and workout hard, and have the kind of life they deserve.”

A first step is to scour secondhand sources for used equipment. People have the best of intentions, but often lack the discipline to keep an exercise routine going. Exercise equipment — an old exercise bike, for example — has often been gathering dust in an unused corner and can be purchased secondhand for next to nothing. And though the original owners may ask for something approaching the original price they paid 10 years ago, which is when they bought it and last used it, they can often be talked down in a hurry. Offer something minimal and it may be accepted just to get this reminder of a failed fitness attempt out of their house.

A jump rope is easy. Cut an appropriate length of clothesline, or any other rope lying around, and two short sections, maybe six to eight inches, of half-inch PVC pipe for handles. If there are end caps for the PVC, even better. Attach the pipe to the end cap, then drill a hole in the end cap wide enough for rope. Pull the rope through and knot it. No end cap? Make the knot bigger. No PVC pipe? Duct tape works.

For building muscle, resistance bands are great and easy to make out of anything long or stretchy. Pantyhose, surgical tubing, large rubber bands, bicycle tire tubes or bungee cords can be used. Or fill cans, plastic beverage bottles or larger plastic milk jugs with sand, rice, rocks or water. Grab an old beach towel to be used for a yoga mat, move that coffee table out of the way and it is time to workout. YouTube has an endless offering of home workout videos, such as 32 Minute Home Cardio Workout with No Equipment, Yoga For Complete Beginners or 30 Minute Full Body Dumbbell Workout using home weights.

Alternatively, FEBC members may have access to discounts on local fitness programs. They may also find discounts on items that can support a physically active life, such as groceries, workout supplies and even some non-emergency medical services. Please note that such services are not insurance and should not replace insurance.

“We encourage all of our clients to make the most of the resources available, maximizing their fitness and well-being with our benefits and their own inventiveness,” said Martinez.
