But while obvious, many do not treat mental health like they would physical health. Indeed, mental health is just as important as physical health to survive and thrive today. Experts say taking an active approach to building good relationships will benefit not only ourselves but our communities as well.
Strong personal relationships could translate to better physical health outcomes, too. A 2012 sociological study found that married people fared better after heart surgery than their single counterparts, with a survival rate three times higher in the three months after the operation. Why precisely the outcomes were better, though, is still unknown.
Following better healing outcomes, good relationships of all kinds also correlate with longer life in general. Again, this could be for many reasons: someone with good friends and close family could be encouraged by their loved ones to live healthily and treat illness; a person with close connections could feel less stress overall, which decreases wear and tear on their body; or there could be an undiscovered biological cause-and-effect.
“We still don’t always know why these strong connections make people healthier, but we almost don’t need to,” said Martinez. “Just knowing that fact should encourage people to better their relationships.
