Financial Education Benefits Center Encourages Strong Relationships to Foster Better Health Outcomes

It’s certain that having meaningful connections with other people is essential for well-being. Just how far-reaching are the effects of interpersonal relationships on health? That is still unknown, but scientists are slowly uncovering more and more data about how our human connections affect us. What is known is that some of the data suggest that good relationships may better mental health, improve healing after a surgery, and even lead to longer life. Financial Education Benefits Center, a health and financial wellness membership benefits company, encourages focusing on meaningful relationships in order to improve overall health.

“Science is telling us that relationships may be even more important than we thought,” said Jennifer Martinez, Manager at FEBC. “Our upcoming health and wellness benefits address a lot of physical health needs, but they also address the personal and mental health aspect, too.”

Our upcoming health and wellness benefits address a lot of physical health needs, but they also address the personal and mental health aspect, too.

FEBC will be offering a suite of wellness benefits to members, including a counseling benefit to certain levels of membership. Counseling can be a tool to work on important relationships like those with spouses, children, parents, friends, and coworkers. Individuals in counseling can work through issues that may be preventing them from having positive connections with others.

Positive human connections are known to improve mental health. That’s the first and probably more obvious health benefit of good relationships with other people. But while obvious, many do not treat mental health like they would physical health. Indeed, mental health is just as important as physical health to survive and thrive today. Experts say taking an active approach to building good relationships will benefit not only ourselves but our communities as well.

Strong personal relationships could translate to better physical health outcomes, too. A 2012 sociological study found that married people fared better after heart surgery than their single counterparts, with a survival rate three times higher in the three months after the operation. Why precisely the outcomes were better, though, is still unknown.

Following better healing outcomes, good relationships of all kinds also correlate with longer life in general. Again, this could be for many reasons: someone with good friends and close family could be encouraged by their loved ones to live healthily and treat illness; a person with close connections could feel less stress overall, which decreases wear and tear on their body; or there could be an undiscovered biological cause-and-effect.

“We still don’t always know why these strong connections make people healthier, but we almost don’t need to,” said Martinez. “Just knowing that fact should encourage people to better their relationships. And our upcoming benefits, specifically the counseling benefit, are meant to help people do just that.”
