Financial Education Benefits Center: Be the Ocean, Be the Sky in Meditation

Ocean View

Many people feel that meditation is about closing or clearing their minds. In meditation, though, trying to make the mind a blank canvas is like trying to will themselves into a self-induced coma. It is impossible. Thoughts, emotions, and pain scream out when a meditator quiets down enough to hear them. This uncomfortable feeling is like descending in an airplane and not knowing that the clouds below aren’t solid, making it seem as though a crash is about to occur. Thoughts and emotions seem like solid, impenetrable barriers until persistent, quiet, thoughtful meditation allows a quiet descent and safe landing to the ground below. For those suffering from anxiety, depression, drug or alcohol dependence, or other mental health challenges, Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC), a company that offers its members benefits and discounts for mental health and other wellness resources, encourages clients to find health and wellness solutions that work for them, such as meditation.

“It is hard establishing a meditation routine. There never seems to be enough time in the day and most people are so exhausted and depleted, it seems impossible,” said Jennifer Martinez, Manager at FEBC. “We encourage all our clients, but especially those suffering from mental health challenges, to make use of our many benefits and discounts focused on physical and mental health and wellness.”

According to popular author and speaker, Gelong Thubten, a Tibetan Buddhist monk who teaches organizations and individuals how to be more content and effective, meditation allows a meditator to become comfortable with their discomfort. In addition to descending in an airplane, Thubten suggests viewing the mind as the ocean. The ocean has no resistance or judgment about waves. They are as much a part of the ocean as its depth or width. Waves, then, are just like thoughts. They just are. No need to resist or judge. “Here comes one,” a meditator might notice, “here comes another one.”

Focusing on breathing can be challenging. A simple plan to think only about breathing is almost immediately disrupted by thoughts that are random, benign, terrifying, or painful. Rather than try to banish those thoughts by trying to push them down or away, Thubten suggests just noticing these thoughts without judgment, then returning to breathe. In this way, returning to awareness of breathing can be seen as, rather than a steady stream of failures, an ocean that broadens and deepens in consciousness and presence.

FEBC encourages members to consider this practice or any other health and wellness practice that helps its members deal with the everyday financial and emotional stresses of life. They consider it so important that FEBC offers a wide array of benefits and discounts to help members find relief from anxiety, depression, alcohol or drug dependence, or many other mental health challenges.

“We want our members to have every chance they can to succeed in their lives,” said Martinez. “We want them to thrive.”
