Financial Education Benefits Center: A New Philosophy of Addiction

A recent WBFO article challenging the “disease” model of addiction pointed to the constantly evolving science of addiction and the many theoretical models that drive perceptions and treatment. New York University philosophy professor Jerome Wakefield recently spoke about addiction being more of a choice than is accepted by many current models that view addiction as a biological process. According to those current models, certain individuals are much more susceptible to brain stimulation caused by the ingestion of drugs and are more likely to become addicts. Wakefield has a broader view, which incorporates the whole person and even society into both addiction and treatment. Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC), a member benefits company specializing in health and financial wellness, offers a variety of benefits intended to help members face challenging personal issues.

“We very much hate to see people suffer, financially and personally,” said Jennifer Martinez, manager at FEBC. “We have a variety of health and wellness resources available to members of all plan levels. Members can utilize a few different telehealth benefits to speak with health professionals about physical symptoms. Also, with our telehealth benefits, members can seek help for mental health concerns.”

Mental health concerns are at the forefront of Wakefield’s attention on addiction. Though he acknowledges that science has found areas of the brain that “light up” when addicts think about or take drugs, he feels that it doesn’t prove addiction is a brain disease. It may just prove that an individual has “an enormous commitment to, love of, and involvement in, that particular activity.”

Wakefield is more drawn to models that show addiction to be a function of internal dysfunction. He sees the consumer economy in which people are constantly enticed to be more productive so that they can eat, watch and do certain desired things; “some people can’t handle the level of demand that is on us today that’s rather unnatural … you’re just always in a state of stress-out or anxiety or depression.” He says that this model is based more on choice and that people can be treated without shame, but as more rational actors that can begin to make healthier decisions.

Those healthier decisions can begin with FEBC pharmacy discounts that can be used at participating locations to obtain prescribed medicine that may address issues connected to addiction, such as anxiety, depression and PTSD. FEBC members also have access to numerous other wellness benefits that may be helpful and can call a representative to find out more information. It’s important to note, though, that FEBC benefits are not insurance and are not intended to replace insurance.

“It is important for each person suffering from addiction and the loved ones that suffer with them to have as many resources as possible for dealing with those challenges,” said Martinez. “We want you to know that you are not alone and we will do all we can to help you.”
