Dr. Robert H. Cohen is Honored With a Paul Starke Warrior Award for His Service to the HIV and AIDS Community

Top Los Angeles Cosmetic Surgeon Provides Free Facial Reconstruction to Individuals Living with HIV/AIDS

Top cosmetic surgeon Robert H. Cohen, M.D. of Westside Aesthetics in Los Angeles, California, was honored with the Paul Starke Warrior Award on December 1 for his service to the HIV community. More than a decade ago, Dr. Cohen founded the Being Alive Facial Reconstruction Program in an effort to provide free facial reconstruction procedures to individuals living with HIV and AIDS.

Each year, the city of West Hollywood honors a handful of individuals with the Paul Starke Warrior Award for their contributions to the HIV community. This year, Dr. Cohen was proud to be amongst them. Since 2007, he has partnered with the non-profit organization Being Alive, which focuses on supporting the mental health and wellness of individuals living with HIV and AIDS. Each week, Dr. Cohen hosts a free clinic at Being Alive’s West Hollywood headquarters, where he works to alleviate aesthetic issues, such a facial hollowing, often caused by the virus.

Giving back to my local community is incredibly important to me; I feel incredibly humbled to have been able to be of service to so many individuals over the last 10 years. Furthermore, I am extremely honored to have been chosen for one of the select Paul Starke Warrior Awards this year. I'm looking forward to many more years of service to this beautiful community."

“Giving back to my local community is incredibly important to me; I feel incredibly humbled to have been able to be of service to so many individuals over the last 10 years,” says Dr. Cohen. “Furthermore, I am extremely honored to have been chosen for one of the select Paul Starke Warrior Awards this year. I’m looking forward to many more years of service to this beautiful community.”

With facial fat loss a common side effect of HIV medications, many patients seeking Dr. Cohen’s expertise describe themselves as appearing “gaunt” or “visibly ill.” In an effort to bolster their confidence, Dr. Cohen performs free facial rejuvenation by way of the filler Sculptra, which stimulates bodies to build new collagen in the injected site. The pharmaceutical company, Galderma, donates the product. Within one to two months of treatment, hollowing fades and patients appear more youthful and salubrious. Results last up to two years.

“I think many of these people are looking in the mirror and seeing someone who appears sick, and that can do a number on one’s mental health,” says Dr. Cohen. “By filling out facial hollowing, I am able to help these individuals feel more like themselves and perhaps, give them a boost of confidence where it once was lost. Most of these patients are disabled and many of them are homeless; it means a lot to me that I can make a positive impact in their lives, no matter how small.”

What once started as a local outreach program has now gained a national following, with individuals from all over country traveling to seek Dr. Cohen’s help.
