Don't Get Carried Away; By the Ocean That Is, Says FEBC

Cool breezes, cooler waters and warm sands: the beach can be the ideal trip during the hotter months for many people. But with every environment comes certain risks that people may be aware of, but not completely prepared for. Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC), a membership benefits company, offers a 24-hour nurse line to call for members who need non-emergency medical advice, that may make staying outdoors a bit safer during summer time.

“There’s an old saying about never turning your back on the ocean and always giving it respect. But the ocean really can be dangerous if you’re not careful, and so taking safety precautions is important,” said Jennifer Martinez, manager at FEBC.

Over time, people who are interested in beaches may hear about things to avoid called riptides. While they may have heard about them, people may not know what they look like. Despite the calm appearance of a waveless bit of water at an ocean, that’s where the potentially deadly riptides are. A riptide can be formed in a variety of ways due to multiple factors, like when there is a sandbar beneath the waters with a break in it, so that the receding waters go through there instead of fighting the oncoming waves. They also often occur near piers and jetties. While a riptide is strong and can certainly pull a swimmer out into the ocean, it doesn’t necessarily pull swimmers underwater. Swimming sideways out of the current or going with the current and then swimming around it and back to shore is usually how most individuals caught in a riptide deal with the problem.

With long-term exposure to the sun, comes the need for proper sun protection. At the beach where most people aren’t interested in layering up, proper sunscreen and sunscreen wearing becomes extra important. Not all sunscreens are created equal and, as a result, a little research might be necessary to find one suitable for an individual’s particular needs. When at the beach, people can lose track of time and might wind up with a sunburn anyway despite having applied sunscreen early on in the day and sunburn treatment items may be a good idea to pick up, such as aloe vera.

Being safe in the hot summer sun may take a little bit more thought and planning than some people might want to initially, but it is worth it in the long run. The access to the 24-hour nurse line that FEBC provides to its members may help when a minor health issue comes up, but is not meant to replace insurance. “Being active, healthy and safe is what we at FEBC want for our members, so they may have the chance to fully enjoy whatever lies ahead of them,” said Martinez.
