As part of National Assisted Living Week, Courtyard Terrace Assisted Living, a Blue Valley Lutheran Homes Facility, held a ceremonial flag burning Tuesday night, September 27th, in accordance with the theme, "Forever Proud." Hebron Boy Scout Troop #305 led the ceremony as the sun set in the west.

"When a United States Flag becomes old, tattered and no longer serviceable, the flag should be retired in a dignified and sacred way, preferably by fire. As the flag is retired and is laid to rest in ashes, it is also appropriate to remember that men and women, like flags are often torn and tattered at the service of our country." - The Boy Scouts of America Handbook

"This is perfect way to honor our nation and our veterans here at Courtyard Terrace," said Michelle Plock, Administrator. "We had a 9/11 remembrance ceremony last night and it is just fitting that we retire the flag tonight." As each stripe of the flag was burned, the significance of each was read. One for the original thirteen colonies, white for purity, red for courage, the 10 Amendments, etc.

Each day of the week had its own theme and activities. Festivities during the week included: making pies and homemade ice cream, a presentation by the Elementary students, a carnival, and a car show. There was also a display honoring the veterans who live at Courtyard Terrace as well as a 9/11 remembrance ceremony.

"Feeling proud of our citizenship, community, friends and families is an important part of being an American," said Melissa Wright, Development Director. "Assisted living week is a demonstration of the commitment our professionals feel when providing care to residents in our communities."

NCAL established National Assisted Living Week® (NALW) in 1995 as a way to promote assisted living to the public. It provides a unique opportunity for residents, families, staff, volunteers, and the surrounding community to come together to celebrate and enjoy a variety of events that show the residents how much we care for and love them.
