BIOTECH Labs Ramps Up COVID Testing Capacity to Help Businesses Reopen With Confidence

As Michigan businesses start opening, both state and federal health agencies have made it clear that mass testing will be essential.

As part of her Phase 4 Opening Plan, Governor Whitmer has strongly encouraged employee testing and required all Michigan businesses to implement COVID-19 a preparedness and response plan. For many, that will include testing.

Based on current Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and American Disabilities Act regulations, employers are both entitled to know if their employees are COVID-19-positive and can require that their employees take tests before returning to work.

Since the COVID-19 crisis began, BIOTECH Laboratories has processed hundreds of tests per day. But foreseeing the need for truly mass testing capabilities, they immediately began the process of increasing their capacity tenfold.

Now, in early June, they have announced the capacity to process 2,500-4,000 test per day, seven days per week, ramping up further to meet demand.

“We’re working directly with business owners to set up convenient testing solutions for their employees,” said BIOTECH EVP Giovanni Khalifeh. “Knowing the status of their employees increases safety and productivity while reducing fear and absenteeism. In short, it gives everyone more confidence.”

BIOTECH is working directly with employers to schedule on-site testing as well as customized testing plans based on varying exposure risks. Collected samples are processed, and results are delivered, in 24 hours. Anyone who tests positive is contacted by a nurse for care guidance.

BIOTECH is also working with local independent pharmacies to establish public, first-come-first-serve testing sites. All privately insured individuals, Medicaid and Medicare patients, and even the uninsured, have access to COVID-19 testing at no cost.

“We have one goal,” continued Giovanni, “to help more people get the information they need to make confident decisions about their business and their lives.”

BIOTECH’s daily operations are run by COO, Joe Khalifeh. “BIOTECH is Michigan’s largest independent medical lab certified by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and operates multiple FDA-approved platforms for COVID-19 and Antibody tests,” said Joe. “We’re standing by, ready to help our neighbors get tested so that they can go back to work with confidence. We know that more testing is needed, and we’re prepared to help more employers and employees get access.”

One of the biggest hurdles facing business owners today is uncertainty. Owners and managers of retail stores and engineering firms alike need to know if their staff are carrying COVID-19, even asymptomatically. A lack of confidence can be paralyzing, especially under the financial strain felt by so many. They need timely information to make sound decisions.
