Biological Tooth Replacement a Reality in Future
Online, April 12, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Teeth replacement with false teeth in the from of dentures and dental implants are the practice of the day all over the world. Researchers have been able to create a comfort that sometimes comes near the feeling of having real teeth with dental implants. Dental implants and dentures can only replace the real teeth in terms of functionality and aesthetics but the feel of real teeth is something that can never be achieved by both these techniques. Dental implants employ screws that are embedded deep into the oral cavity and hold the false teeth in place thus giving them a real look. Dental Dentures are still below standards and can't be worn when the individual is sleeping and are prone to damage even at the slightest accident.
With researchers looking for a better options than dental implants and dentures to fill the gap that has been left by tooth loss much advancements in the field of craniofacial development and stem cell biology have been made. This has surely given a hope that lost teeth can be gained naturally by a human being. Although the research is still in its infancy but the results achieved so far have been quite heartening where one particular researcher Professor Sharpe has been working on this concept.
The trick is to produce bioengineered teeth. These bioengineered teeth can be produced by generating immature teeth which are just like the ones that are created in the embryo. Then these immature teeth are transplanted as cell pellets into the adult jaw so that they develop into functional teeth. Although all this looks quite simple but it is quite a complex process however the results achieved so far in varied environments have been quite heartening if suitable cells are identified there is all possibility that bioteeth can be developed clinically.
All these experiments have been carried out with embryonic cells where embryonic tooth primordia cells can readily from immature teeth and later on after the processes of disassociation and recombination can grow into full teeth but such cell sources are impractical to use in general therapy. As of now researchers are busy in teh identification of adult sources for human epithelial and mesenchymal cells that need to be obtained in sufficient numbers to make bioteeth a feasible alternative to dental implants.
