Bacteria Responsible for Lowering Immune System in Oral Cavity Informs A Michigan Dentist

Oral cavity is the most sensitive part of the human body as it comes in direct contact with the external environment and is the first point of contact every time a human being eats of drinks something. Keeping the oral cavity free from all kinds of i

A new research has revealed that bacteria known as Porphyromonas gingivalis causing gum disease in human beings tends to manipulate the human body's immune system to an extent that is disables normal processes. The damage is quite heavy as it prompts the production of the anti-inflammatory molecule Interleukin-10 (IL-10). The production of the anti-inflammatory molecule specifically inhibits the function of T-cells that would have helped to protect the human body from this microbial infection.

Many dentists have been carrying out research in this regard and thus focus on keeping the oral cavity clean not just by brushing and flossing but also by other means. As the human immune system is exposed to many other pathogens thus it may be quite difficult to cure a particular disease if the human body has already been hosting Porphyromonas gingivalis.

Apart from that the fact that 50 percent of US population over 50 years suffers from periodontal diseases this study becomes all the more crucial as it will come handy in deciding the course of treatment that would be taken by dentists while attending on patients who are already infected with Porphyromonas gingivalis and then have developed some other kind of periodontal infection.

Scientists came to the conclusion via a series of experiments that were carried out on mice. Cells from mice were treated with Porphyromonas gingivalis and another portion of the cells from mice was left without being infected with Porphyromonas gingivalis. After that all cells were tested for interferon gamma production. The cells that were infected with Porphyromonas gingivalis were found to be have an increase in interferon gamma production whereas no increase was found in the cells that were not infected with Porphyromonas gingivalis.

Thus it was inferred that the damage done by Porphyromonas gingivalis was quite obvious and immune system of the organism or organ is destroyed once it is exposed to this pathogen. Another fact that came to light was that the treatment needs to start as early as possible to take control of the situation. Thus Porphyromonas gingivalis can establish a chronic infection in the form of periodontal disease.

A vaccine to stop the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis can be developed or other therapeutic treatments can be given to eradicate the damage done by Porphyromonas gingivalis and save the human oral cavity from further deterioration.
