Ayurveda Medicine includes not only herbal medicine and dietetics, but specialized bodywork therapies all designed to restore balance and health to the body and mind. One such treatment is called BASTI, which can be applied, to various areas of the body. For example. KATI BASTI (lower back treatment) is a special treatment specially medicated oils applied to the lower end of the vertebral region, where it is pooled for a period of time. This treatment is very effective in treating lower back pain, sciatica and neurological conditions of the lower back and lower limb. This treatment concludes with a massage of the entire back.

Another such treatment is SHIRODARA, in which a steady stream of warm oil flows from a vessel placed over the forehead. Special oils often infused with mind-calming herbs are chosen depending on the constitution and condition of the individual and the season of the year . Deeply stress relieving, Shirodhara calms the nervous system and improves mental clarity and cognition. It is an effective treatment for insomnia, memory loss, hormonal imbalance, headaches, mental tension (anxiety, worry, stress) and certain skin diseases. Shirodhara has also been reported as effective for people seeking to balance jet lag, exhaustion, emotional imbalance, hypertension, asthma, TMJ, ADHD, and various disorders of the head, neck, eyes, ears, nose and nervous system.

There are a variety of other body work therapies using specialized massage, energy point manipulations and administration of medicinal oils. Most important is Panchkarma, a purification therapy to cleanse and restore the metabolic process through food and herbal medicines. It is used in deep-rooted chronic disease as well as seasonal imbalance of health. As the accululated toxins are eliminated from the body the person becomes healthy.

The bodywork therapies of Ayurveda Medicine offered by Dr. Rudra are highly specialized and require years of hands on clinical training and
experience to be effective. Ayurvedic type massage offered in spas and centers not dedicated Ayurvedic Medical health care, may appear similar, but are decisively different. Without the proper training in Ayurvedic Medicine, these therapies cannot be administered properly and may even aggravate or worsen the persons condition.

To better understand the how Ayurveda Medicine understands the unique characteristics of each individual in the diagnosis and treatment if disease, Dr. Rudra provides the following brief summary:

Ayurveda, which means "The Science of Life" is a system of medicine originating in ancient India more than 4000 years ago which developed out of the ancient Vedic culture, along side yoga and meditation. According to Ayurveda, everything in the universe is made up of five primary elements, namely, earth, water, fire, air and ether (space). In the human body these primary elementals combine to form three basic constitutional forms or Doshas, which are Vata composed of ether and air, Pitta, composed of fire and water and Kapha, composed of earth and water. Every person has a unique combination of all three Doshas in which each Dosha is expressed in varying proportions. The individual mind-body constitution of each person is determined by the unique combination of the three Doshas. . In a state of health the doshas are in balance. When out of balance, disorders of body and mind are produced.

For every person. each Dosha governs particular biological and mental actions and has its respective location in the body. In a state of health the doshas are in balance. When out of balance, disorders of body and mind are produced. Vata governs the mind, energy and movement such as breathing, the pumping of the heart and and all musculoskeletal activity, and the coordination of the senses. Vata is principally located in the colon and also in the thighs, pelvic girdle, bones, ears, skin and hair Pitta governs the appetite and thirst and the metabolic functions of digestion, absorption, and assimilation of food, the regulation of body temperature and intelligence and comprehension. Pitta is principally located in the small intestine and in the heart, liver, spleen, gallbladder, blood and grey matter of the brain.. Kapha provides bodily hydration, and lubrication, governs the regulation of fat, comprises the mass and structure of our organs, tissue and cells, provides bodily strenth and stamina and supports positive emotions such as compassion, forgiveness, love and contentment. Kapha is principally located in the lungs, stomach, pancreas, white matter of the brain, blood plasma, joints and nose, mouth throat and sinus.

Individuals who are predominantly Vata typically have thin frames and lightly muscled bodies, dry skin and hair, prefer warmth, tan easily and have irregular appetites with a tendency for digestive and malabsorbtion problems. Their stamina is low and sleep quality is variable and often poor. They are constantly active and have difficulty remaining idle or at rest. They are quick learners, but easily forgetful. . When out of balance, they can suffer emaciation, disorders of elimination, e.g., gas, bloating, constipation; movement disorders e.g., stiffness, spasm, and tremor and insomnia, as well as anxiety, fear and depression.

Pitta individuals have medium frames and more moderately developed muscles, moist skin, dislike heat, sunburn easily and have strong appetites and good digestion. They have moderate strength and stamina and are light sleepers. They are mentally disciplined, having excellent learning and concentration power. When out of balance, Pitta can produce hyperacidity, gastritis, peptic ulcer, anemia, hepatitis, chronic fatigue, inflammatory disorders, as well as, anger, irritability, jealousy.

Kapha individuals have large frames with heavy bones and muscles, thick oily skin and hair. Their appetite is steady and digestion and metabolism is slow resulting in easily gaining weight. They have strong body strength and stamina and are sound and heavy sleepers. They are calm and steady and enjoy eating and relaxing. When out of balance, Kapha disorders include obesity, diabetes, congestive disorders and arthritis.

According to Ayurveda, to be healthy, it is necessary to follow a diet, specific to one's individual combination of the Dohsas and to avoid food that can cause an imbalance. If spiritual development is desired, then a vegetarian diet is advised. For example Vata individuals should avoid foods that are too drying or astringent such as dried fruit, grains such as g buckwheat and barley, most beans with the exception of mung beans , red lentils and tofu. All raw vegetables should be avoided as well those that are more drying such as broccoli mushrooms. Dairy products, (except for powdered milk) nuts and spices are favored, as are most sweeteners, except white sugar, which should be avoided.

Pitta individuals should favor sweet fruit and avoid those that are sour.
Pungent vegetables such as daikon, turnips, green olives, horseradish, and hot peppers should be avoided. Raw vegetables are acceptable. Most grains are acceptable with the exception of corn, millet, dry oats, and rye. Most beans are acceptable as are most dairy products with the exception of sour cream, buttermilk, hard cheeses. Most nuts should be avoided with the exception of almonds, coconut and charole. Pitta individuals should avoid large amounts of salt in their diet as well as heating spices such as cayenne pepper, paprika, cloves, and dry ginger. Most sweeteners are good, but honey only in moderate amounts.

Kapha individuals have the strongest tendency to gain weight, which is difficult to loose. Sweet and sour fruit should be generally avoided. Astringent fruits such as apples, apricots berries, pears, raisins, and strawberries are favored. Pungent and bitter vegetables are favored such as cabbage, carrot, corn, garlic, green beans, mushrooms, leafy greens and potatoes. Most nuts should be avoided as they are too fatty as well as most sweeteners with exception of honey.

By understanding ones constitution according to the Doshas and following the appropriate guideline of diets and daily activity, one can
enjoy sustained health, energy and freedom from disease.
