AMW Raising Awareness and Funds for Breast Cancer

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the AMW team is supporting the battle against the disease. The company president discussed the impact made by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).

“The BCRF’s Pink Promotion is a fundraising and awareness-raising effort,” said William Houtz, the president of AMW. “It supports breast cancer treatment research as well as help for individuals afflicted with the disease. Through the Pink Promotion, one of the valued brands we advocate has donated more than $3.5 million to the cause. My colleagues and I are proud to participate in the effort.”

Houtz indicated that there are plans to continue the support through a long-term partnership. “There’s unlimited potential to contribute to this important foundation,” he stated. “Philanthropy has always been a key aspect of the AMW culture. In fact, we do volunteer work and engage in charitable giving throughout the year. There are incredible benefits associated with giving back. We could never pass up an opportunity to assist in the fight against breast cancer.”

“I can’t emphasize the importance of breast cancer research enough,” Houtz continued. “It’s more than looking for a cure. It’s also about finding strategies for preventing the disease, learning why certain people are more susceptible to it, improving care, and generating better outcomes in general.”

According to Houtz, BCRF is making a huge difference. For each dollar spent through the foundation, $.91 goes directly to eradicating the disease. Millions of dollars have spurred faster breakthroughs and customized treatment. Further, BCRF only funds the best of the best in the field. More than 200 experts are currently awarded grants for their work on an array of projects.

“As I understand, breast cancer is highly complex,” Houtz indicated. “There are clearly no easy answers. That’s why researchers have several different areas of focus. For instance, there is still a lot of interest in tumor biology. Learning as much as possible about the basics allows experts to get to the heart of the disease. This includes the genes in cancer cells, tumor environments, the molecules of cancer cells, how and why they become abnormal, and why tumors respond differently to various treatments.”
