This once-in-a-lifetime trip focuses on India’s famous silk, spice, and sandalwood trades. Designed for aromatherapists, holistic health professionals, and wellness novices alike, this tours offers a unique opportunity to safely explore India’s rich botanical culture, past and present.

“On this trip, you’ll have a unique opportunity to explore this rugged region and immerse yourself in the rich aromatic and botanical culture of India,” says Dorene Petersen, who will be leading participants through a blend of lectures, workshops, and tours.

Traveling by guided coach, the tour will depart from Bangalore and travel through the Western Ghats to the breathtaking coast of Cochin. Travelers will have the opportunity to see India through the eyes of a wellness enthusiast, exploring:

  • Ayurvedic medicine production and treatment methods
  • Silk production from the cocoon auction to the silk weavers (Read this blog on silk production: http://info.achs.edu/blog/study-abroad-in-india-how-silk-is-produced)
  • Mountain tea plantations and a government-operated regenerating sandalwood forest
  • Spice trade from growing and harvesting to production of black pepper and cardamom
  • Essential oil distilleries for eucalyptus, jasmine, sandalwood, and other aromatic botanicals (with an opportunity to connect with vendors and buy directly from the source)

“In addition to a transformative and unique educational experience, we are committed to incorporate the component of giving back in our study abroad programs,” says Petersen. “Students on this trip will have the opportunity to meet with the children of the Srishti School for the Differently Abled, which specializes in developmental activities for rehabilitative education, as well as provide much needed supplies. Our students will be able to have a positive impact on the children and their future. We’ll also be supporting local businesses throughout our tour program.”
