The first thing the director reminds her young leaders to do is to be an active listener. She commented, “There is so much you can learn from older colleagues, and those lessons can be very helpful in a new manager’s first days at the helm. Anyone new to this type of role should observe more experienced team members and learn as much as possible about their personality traits and their work tendencies. Doing so will help young leaders understand what works and what specific areas need improvement.”

It’s also important for younger leaders to get to know older associates on a personal level. “There are many ways you can accomplish this,” Cassie added. “Take more experienced teammates out to dinner or go to their children’s sporting events with them. By showing respect for their interests and their families, you will show them that you are invested in their future success.”
