2014 Recipients of Rotary Club of Miami Scholarship to be Recognized
Miami, FL, October 28, 2014 (Newswire.com) - Recipients of the 2014 Thomas Brown McClelland Scholarship will be recognized during a pinning ceremony held by Rotary Club of Miami and Dr. Pascal J. Goldschmidt, Sr. VP for Medical Affairs, University of Miami Dean of the Miami Miller School of Medicine, and CEO, UM Health System. The ceremony will be held on Wednesday, October 29 at 5:30 p.m. at the University of Miami Technology Park, first floor conference room A/B, located at 1951 NW 7 Ave., complimentary self parking.
The Scholarship was created through an endowment provided in the will of Thomas Brown McClelland, an active member of Rotary Club of Miami from 1939 to his death in 1980. The initial bequest was $2.5 million. Through careful management by the trustees, the principal has grown. Using the income from the fund, Rotary Club of Miami has awarded over 1,000 scholarships totaling more than $6.0 million to medical school students that graduated from a Miami-Dade County high school.
Today, Rotary Club of Miami oversees the financial management of the trust, continues to evaluate applications, conducts interviews, and recommends awardees. Medical school students who graduated from a public or private high school in Miami-Dade County who have been recently accepted at a medical school accredited by the American Medical Association are eligible to apply for a scholarship. Applications are accepted when they are starting the first year of medical school, as well as, during their second and third year of enrollment.
“It is satisfying to meet and help so many people. Often, companies and individuals are seeking opportunities to give back or develop social corporate responsibility programs. Rotary Club of Miami offers different ways to give back and create fellowship,” said Marcos Menendez, Membership Chairman. “I invite you to join Rotary Club of Miami for lunch. Meetings are every Thursday at the Hard Rock Café at Bayside Market Place in Downtown Miami. They start at 12:15 p.m. and end promptly at 1:30 p.m.,” he added.
