SDUIS Students Create Website and Facebook Pages as Class Project - Real World Practical Experience for International Enrollees
Online, April 11, 2012 (Newswire.com) - San Diego University for Integrative Studies (http://sduis.edu/) (SDUIS) students in Hospitality have created website and Facebook pages as hands-on promotions for their class projects.
For the courses of The Media as Mediator (BHS 457), and Supervision Skills in Hospitality (HMT 457). Students published Facebook and websites based on class work, textbooks, articles, and discussions.
"SDUIS international students have to absorb a lot of material inside and outside of class," Ken Joys, SDUIS lecturer says. "By creating a website or Facebook page to showcase this information, students learn how to use the material for a real world application."
In each class the students formed project teams.
For The Media as Mediator the students created a Media As Mediator the Inside Story. Kinds of Media, Text Books, Mass Communications, Bright Advertising Ideas, Best Blogs of 2011, and Videos, were the individual tabs the students researched and created. Each tab represents a separate aspect of Media as Mediator and serves as a summary of what the course has to offer.
For Supervision Skills in Hospitality the class divided into three groups and created three separate Facebook pages. Dream Team, Siam Girls, and The Incredibles.
The Dream Team Facebook page provides useful information for any student of
supervision in the service industry. Articles about the Best Companies to Work For,
Hospitality Training Tips, Defining the Customer, Human Capital, and Groupon and
Other Special Promotions, provide a survey of Information available to hospitality supervisors.
The Siam Girls Facebook page is a further service industry resource. Supervision Essentials, Secrets to Better Supervisory Skills, and Using Social Media to Communicate Company Benefits, are some of the articles that readers will find on the Siam Girls page.
The Incredibles Facebook page reinforces the customer service message. Presenting articles such as Motivational Leadership, 10 Best and 10 Worst Companies for Customer Service, Japanese-Style Customer Service, the Art of Kikuburi, and Customer Service the Lifeblood of Any Business, Siam Girls supplies critical information for the students of customer service.
The website and Facebook pages are user friendly. Photos, Friends, Blogs, Useful Links, and Comments, encourage user interaction.
"By taking class room work along with required reading assignments and publishing these Facebook or website pages, SDUIS students learn how to present the material in a way that is interesting and informative to other students, or non-students," Joys continues. "It's all there for everyone to see, read, learn, and comment."
Besides their academic training, the students can cite these self-created Facebook pages and websites as practical work products that fully demonstrate their media and service industry understanding and marketing skills. It is a valuable asset that can be applied no matter where the students' future careers take them.
