Review: Atlas Genius at Bowery Ballroom
Online, June 27, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Australian-bred band Atlas Genius showed that they are a force to be reckoned with at their sold-out Bowery Ballroom show on Wednesday, June 19 in New York City. Along with opening acts Haerts and Pacific Air, the indie-rockers put on one of the most energetic, entertaining shows I've been to this year.
Haerts was the first to prepare the crowd for the show. I'd never heard of them before, but I can say that I'm definitely not disappointed. Their sound is upbeat and easy to dance along to. The New York City-based (Germany/England/US-bred) band is comprised of Nini Fabi, Ben Gebert, Garrett Ienner, Derek McWilliams, and Jonathon Schmidt.
The five-piece band succeeded in getting me to make a mental note to check out more of their songs later and in getting the crowd pumped for the next band up to perform.
Next up for my musical enjoyment was the band Pacific Air, whom I'd also never heard of but was pleasantly surprised by their sound. The group, formally known as Ko Ko and headed by brothers Ryan and Taylor Lawhon, have only been around about a year or so but I can definitely see big things for them. The crowd clearly loved them as they sang and danced along to their set.
Pacific Air reminded me of a hybrid of Passion Pit and Walk the Moon except lead singer Ryan has a voice uniquely his own. To go along with their unique sound the band is also quite adept at creating their own peculiar dance moves. I found myself giggling and dancing along as the band grooved to their music on stage. It was quite the sight to see, yet it was absolutely fitting to their style.
Overall, Pacific Air's sound is interesting and exciting, I definitely have added them to my radar and will be watching out for big things from them in the future.
As Pacific Air ended and the time between them and Atlas Genius grew shorter, the venue quickly filled to capacity. Finally, after waiting for what felt like an eternity, the lights dimmed, spot-lights shone and the band took the stage.
