Preventative Dental Care - The Best Way to Save Our Teeth

We are so blessed to live in an age where we can keep our teeth for a lifetime - and most people are keeping them.

Dentistry has changed so much over the centuries. Consider that we didn't know the cause of periodontal disease until the 1950s. Or consider that for thousands of years we would just accept the fact that humans would loose our teeth. We are so blessed to live in an age where we can keep our teeth for a lifetime - and most people are keeping them.

Keeping our teeth for a lifetime has become a reality for most people because of modern dental principals and philosophies. We used to wait for teeth to break or become loose before we knew there was a problem. I call this "Break and Repair" dentistry. But now we can see signs leading to tooth loss before a tooth breaks or becomes loose. If we act on these signs of tooth loss the chance of us keeping our teeth dramatically increases.

So what are some of the signs leading to tooth loss?
- Loose or mobile teeth
- Cracked teeth
- Excessive wear on the chewing surfaces
- Decayed teeth

Most of the time, these signs are asymptomatic and we don't even know it is happening to us. It's not until a tooth becomes symptomatic that we know there is a problem, but by then it is often too late. Once a tooth becomes symptomatic, the risk of losing it dramatically increases.

Since small cavities get larger, and gingivitis worsens and turns into periodontitis, it just makes sense to try and prevent our teeth from progressing to the point where they are likely to be lost. If we can catch and treat decay at an early stage, we can save our God-given enamel by not letting decay get larger. If we can detect and treat periodontal disease at an early stage, we can prevent our teeth from becoming mobile and falling out. If we can detect and treat cracked teeth when the cracks are superficial, we can prevent teeth from fracturing the roots (at which time we usually have to extract the teeth).
