Obesity Accounts for Nearly 21% of Healthcare Costs, Researchers Claim

Researchers found that the cost of obesity is most likely twice as high as previous estimates and is now responsible for nearly 21% of healthcare expenses.

A recent study by researchers at Cornell University found that the cost of obesity is most likely twice as high as previous estimates and is now responsible for nearly 21% of healthcare expenses.

The researchers found that annual medical costs for obese individuals are over $2,700 higher than if they were not obese. This adds up to $190 billion a year. Obesity raises the risk of cancer, stroke, heart disease and diabetes, and raises the cost of any medical condition or procedure.

"We believe that even this estimate is way too low, because it is based on body mass index (BMI) data that was recently shown to be grossly inaccurate," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and
The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). "It most likely underestimates the number of people who are actually obese by nearly 40% when compared with a better measure of actual body composition."

"There are many who believe government intervention will be necessary to reduce obesity," adds Dian. "However, this Big Brother approach will not help. Healthcare costs are already the biggest risk to the solvency and future of our country. Only proper diet and lifestyle choices can turn things around. It is the responsibility of every individual to take care of themselves and do whatever is necessary to manage their body composition and health."
