Melissa Harrington Hughes 9/11 Memorial Fund
Online, September 11, 2011 (Newswire.com) - The Junior League of San Francisco has announced that on the 10-year anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center, a community donation will be made in memory of member Melissa Harrington-Hughes, who lost her life that day.
Born and raised in West Springfield, Massachusetts, Melissa lived an accomplished life. After completing a BA from Dickinson College and a Master's degree from George Washington University, Melissa began her career with the International Relation Division of the Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C. as a trade specialist with China. Her career eventually brought her to the Bay Area and the Stanford Research Institute. By 2001, Melissa was the Director of Business Development for Slam Dunk Networks, a tech startup located in Redwood Shores. It was a business meeting for this role that brought her to the 101st floor of the World Trade Center North Tower on September 11.
To honor Melissa after her tragic passing, the Junior League of San Francisco created a memorial fund in her name. Over the past 10 years, this fund has benefitted many local charities and non-profit organizations, including the Peninsula Community Foundation for Beating the Odds Scholarship Fund, the East Bay Agency for Children, the Family Service Agency of San Mateo, and the San Francisco Mayor's Summit for Women. The Junior League also created an annual award for an accomplished active member called the Melissa Harrington Hughes Outstanding New Leadership Award.
