A new martial arts academy is opening in Lakewood beginning in May. Denver Jiu-Jitsu is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) academy operated by BJJ Blackbelt Rodrigo Salazar, a native of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Denver Jiu-jitsu is a member of the international Relson Gracie Team. The new Lakewood academy marks their second location in the Denver, Colorado area.

A grand opening ceremony is planned for Saturday May 14, 2011 from 11am to 2pm. The ceremony will feature a free street self defense seminar that is open to the public, as well as food from local vendors, product give aways, and grappling / kickboxing demonstrations. Both children and adults are welcome to come join in the activities-there will also be exclusive pre-sale membership deals for those looking to get into BJJ, Muay Thai or Mixed Martial Arts.

The new location will feature classes in BJJ, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts training, Law Enforcement training, and Self Defense training-it will also feature a full retail section with products from Eminent Fight Company (http://www.eminentfightcompany.com), the official brand/online store of Denver Jiu-Jitsu.

Relson Gracie, is a 9th degree Red & Black Belt Jiu-Jitsu Master, and is the second oldest son of Grand Master Helio Gracie, considered by many to be the father of BJJ. Relson is one of the two highest-ranked BJJ instructors in North America, and older brother to original Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) champion Royce Gracie, who he trained for the original UFC events.

The original downtown location of Denver Jiu-Jitsu opened up last year at 719 Mariposa Street, in a USA Judo sponsored facility that is shared with Denver Judo, one of the top Judo programs in all of Colorado. Since that time Denver Jiu-Jitsu has worked with many students from a variety of backgrounds, including lawyers, real estate agents and college students. Head instructor Rodrigo Salazar, along with Master Relson Gracie, have also worked with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation as well as Colorado State Patrol on ground defense tactics. The new location at 7105 Colfax Avenue marks the academy's first location that is fully their own.
