Ms. Hayssen says that she started designing jewelry when a health crisis made her rethink the direction her life was taking:
“I was diagnosed with breast cancer just before I turned 50, which was not at all how I'd planned to celebrate that milestone. I joke that my chemo and radiation treatments turned on my creative gene, but a part of me truly believes that. Any catastrophic diagnosis changes the way you look at life. I was lucky. I am 10+ years from my diagnosis, cancer-free and healthier than I was before it. But the experience changes you. You aren't the same person coming through it as you were when you started. I struggled for a while to try to figure out what to do next. I took a few jewelry classes, fell in love with the creative process and was completely hooked. My art has evolved over the years, and I now work mostly with metal, wire, and artisan glass beads. I have always created pieces with Austrian crystals and always will because, come on - they're gorgeous!”
