How Trance Music And The Egyptian Revolution Brought A Diverse Group of New Yorkers Together
Online, February 24, 2011 (Newswire.com) - How trance music and the Egyptian Revolution brought a diverse group of New Yorkers together
New York, New York - Not since the fall of the Iron Curtain has a peaceful popular uprising caused such monumental regime change.
And judging from a film documentary project, "The New Exodus", that has spontaneously brought Basques, Egyptians, Thais, Greeks, Chinese, Muslims and Jews together here in New York City, it's a phenomenon that appears to have unprecedented international support.
Profoundly moved by what's been going on in his homeland, Egyptian Copt and New York-based music producer "Minoo" has sought to create a film documenting the revolution, by looking at it from the outside in.
By conducting interviews with writers, journalists, historians, artists and other critical thinkers in the US and around the world, this electronic music producer seeks to both unite peoples from different backgrounds under freedom's universal language as well as utilize these differences to more fully understand the uprising itself.
Interestingly, it is Minoo's particular genre of electronic music, trance, that led him to such a diverse group of supporters for the film. Although still catching on in the US, trance's massive international appeal is what brought these strangers from varied backgrounds together after New York-based trance party promoter Deme Spy from Trance Mansion asked Minoo to showcase his music. Within days this connection grew into a much wider effort.
Basque photographers Mikel Nieto Segura and John Goitiart were covering one of Trance Mansion's events when they heard of the project and fell in love with it. They're now volunteering their filmmaking skills to make it happen.
Benjapol and Rob Koda, owners of Stay, one of the Lower East Side's staple lounges, agreed to host an Egyptian music and trance party benefit for the film. This will take place on Monday, February 28th at 9 PM at 244 E. Houston St. Stay will be donating proceeds from bar sales to the film.
Celebrity promoter and Assistant Director of the film, Moustafa Aamer, is organizing the fundraiser along with Trance Aid.
From Tahrir Square to Houston Street, the winds of freedom know no borders. Fellow New Yorkers and other friends of democracy from the tri-state area are asked to help support this film by attending the benefit at Stay or contacting Minoo for donations.
