German Dental Talks About Mood Disorders and TMJ Pain
Dubai, August 28, 2015 (Newswire.com) - It is an ongoing debate, that the role of psychological disorder symptoms or risk factors for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain. Research conducted in recent times has associated depression and TMJ pain, but still need further investigation. The German dental clinic in Dubai explains that German researchers writing in The Journal of Pain evaluated more than 3,000 individuals and discovered that those individuals who suffer from depression and anxiety had an increased risk for temporomandibular pain upon palpation.
"Symptoms and signs such as tooth grinding, facial clenching and genetic factors may initiate TMJ and certain behavioral studies suggest an association between TMJ pain and depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder" explains the dental specialist.
In the study, the researchers were looking at the relative risk of depressive symptoms and anxiety on TMJ pain that lasted over five years, in each patient. Each participant underwent medical examinations, oral health assessments, health-check interviews, and completed a risk factor questionnaire. TMJ pain was assessed from the oral health exams, according to guidelines and the investigations revealed that depressive symptoms were highly related to joint pain than muscle pain, and that anxiety symptoms were linked with muscle pain. The explanation behind this is that depressive and anxiety symptoms may initiate muscular hyperactivity followed by muscle abnormality and altered muscle mechanics, which can produce inflammation and cause muscle pain. It was assumed that TMJ might be related to abnormal pain stimuli processing caused by imbalances in the neurotransmitters serotonin and catecholamines. So, TMJ pain might reflect the physical manifestation of anxiety or depression. Thus giving the researchers a strong indication that moderate relationships between symptoms of depression or anxiety and signs of TMJ does exist.
For patients who are suffering from TMJ in Dubai the German Dental Clinic, with its team of highly qualified professionals, provides a variety of dental services based on correcting the physiologic "misalignment" of the jaw at the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) to eliminate pain.
