Free De-addiction Camp Organized at Village "daun Majra" Kharar

Nagar, Mohali (Punjab), India, January 16, 2015 (Newswire.com) - A deaddiciton camp was organized by department of Psychiatry and Deaddiction, Cheema Medical complex, Phase4, Mohali at village Daun Majra, Distt Mohali on 11th January 2015.Addciiton or Substance abuse has been most gigantic problem which our society is facing now days. This is more so relevant when it comes to Punjab. Related to this there have been 3 causalities in village-Daun Majra in last 3 month and so. These boys were in there 2o’s and injectable drug use took their lives mercilessly. The panchayat of village –Daun Majra therefore decided to hold a religious gathering to offer peace to demised souls. Reliable statistics also point out that majority of Punjabi youths are involved in this menace. We as a department of Psychiatry and Deaddcition, Cheema Medical Complex, Phase 4, Mohali has taken up this challenge to do our best to treat these youngsters from the shackles of addiction so we planned a camp which offered free deaddcition services which included consultation by Psychiatrist Dr.Sukhtej Sahni, MD Psychiatry from GMCH sec 32, Chandigarh and motivation enhancement talks along with free distribution of medicine. A 242 No. of patients attended the camp and they were thoroughly satisfied with the services provided. Majority of the youth was abusing opiates. Rest 1/3 rd of them was abusing alcohol. Off all the patients tobacco use was universal, the primary substance of abuse. Along with this, Cannibis use was also reported by the majority of patients.
To our surprise we observed that more than 30 % of opiate users were injectable drug users. These youths were hence provided with the additional information and education sessions regarding the hazards of injectable drug use and risk of contracting HIV & hepatitis. During the feedback sessions it was noted that majority did not have any awareness regarding the hazards of injectable drug use.
In addition to this, the community present at the religious gathering was also given talk by Dr. Sukhtej Sahni, MD Psychiatry from GMCH sec 32, Chandigarh. In this, topics extended from causation to treatment of substance used disorders were discussed. In this talk, community gathering participated actively and raised questions regarding the evil of addiction and their doubts were cleared to the level of their satisfaction. We as a department of Psychiatry, Cheema Medical Complex, Phase 4 , Mohali will be continuing our efforts in this field so that one day we may see the change. To potentiate our effort we started 24*7 deaddiction services available at Cheema Medical Complex, Phase 4 Mohali.
