Vanguard College Preparatory School to Dedicate Historic-turned-"Green" Building

Vanguard College Preparatory School in Texas restores a 1930's building, now named Bostick Hall, that houses state-of-the-art science labs, a student activities center and the Scott Poage Family Reference Center. Class of 2010 SAT average was 1255.

Vanguard College Preparatory School today announced that a 1930's building on its campus, which was renovated, restored and now houses state-of-the-art science labs, a student activities center and the Scott Poage Family Reference Center, will be dedicated on March 25, 2011.

Formerly known as Building One, the 12,000 square-foot, two-story building will be renamed Virginia and Buddy Bostick Hall at the dedication.

"I have warm memories of studying with my friends in this building, which was then called the Math-Science Building," said Kyle Deaver, current chair of Vanguard's board of trustees, who attended Vanguard in the 1980's. "Restoring the building instead of demolishing and replacing it will allow future generations of students to create similar memories."

School administrators are expecting recognition from the Texas Historical Commission for the building's original structural and historic significance as well as LEED certification for environmental awareness in construction.

Bostick Hall sits on the west side of the Vanguard campus. Kicking off the school's annual Founders' Weekend, it will be dedicated during a reception on Friday, March 25, 2011, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The public is invited.

The late Dr. Scott Tabor Poage bequeathed to Vanguard its first-ever $1 million gift and stipulated that it be used to build a library. Virginia and Buddy Bostick, as well as others in their family gave an additional significant gift, and the building will be named in the Bosticks' honor.

Mazanec Construction and Grant Dudley (Vanguard Class of 1975) of RBDR Architects oversaw the $2 million restoration project, which took nine months to complete. Prior to the restoration, the building was used by the math and science departments as well as administration.
