Properly Hydrating Your Body: There's More To It Than Just Drinking Water

One study found that some fruits and vegetables might hydrate our bodies twice as effectively as a glass of water.

Over the course of humanity's evolutionary past, almost everything we ate had a very high percentage of water. For example, fruits, vegetables, eggs and raw animal protein are composed of somewhere between 70% to 96% water. The ramifications of this fact are worth examining.

"Early on in our study of human diet, we often noticed that our personal hydration levels increased after consuming fruits and vegetables," say , Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, co-authors of TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH). "We observed this effect on a consistent basis, and we used to wonder why-particularly since we were drinking adequate amounts of water."

In July 2009, the Daily Mail reported on a research study performed at the University of Aberdeen Medical School in Scotland. The study found that some fruits and vegetables might hydrate our bodies twice as effectively as a glass of water. This confirmed the Griesels' observation about their hydration levels, and ensured that a focus on fruit and vegetable consumption was given a top spot in their TurboCharged program.

Another study from the University of Naples found that certain plant chemicals like lutein and zeaxanthin help increase hydration even more.

The more similar a fluid is to our own body's composition the more readily and effectively it will be absorbed into our cells. This is what makes fruits, vegetables and even raw animal proteins like milk, eggs, fish and even meat so effective and beneficial. The more you increase your intake of moisture rich natural foods, the less additional water intake you will need and the healthier you will become.
