Promoting Tourism in Nairobi

As tourism forms the core of most of the world economies, different types of activities are undertaken to promote a country and its various attractions.

The Miss Tourism Kenya Finals 2014-15 was hosted at Kenyatta International Convention Center by Nairobi County. Nairobi is the bustling capital of Kenya. The city, along with its neighboring areas, forms the Nairobi County.

The theme of the event was ‘Our Country, Our Beauty, Our Heritage.’ It served as a platform for the members of the County to exhibit their cultural variances, style and vision in order to present themselves as the best destination in terms of travel and tourism.

Tourism includes a lot of features — people, nature, wildlife, food, culture, heritage and so on. Such events are a great way to highlight all of these attractions.

Significance of tourism

A large part of tourism in Kenya rests on safaris and tours of its amazing national parks. Whilst nature has magnetic appeal here, the vibrant cultural aspect cannot be ignored. There are also beaches and fun activities in the country that serve as a great attraction.

Tourism is very important for the economy of Kenya and its capital city has always been able to lure travelers from the world over to visit the city and explore its myriad wonders. The region has witnessed a rise in its number of visitors that has led to the growth of the economy as a whole. Infrastructure of the city is evolving with an improvement in transportation and communication networks. More and more hotels are coming up offering world-class amenities and luxuries.

Apart from nature, there are some interesting spots that stand as a testimony to the country's rich past. These are the hidden gems of Nairobi.

In the words of Mutheu Mbondo, an organiser of the city's first historical walking tours, "There is so much in Nairobi, but we haven't bothered to shine a light on it. Kenya's colonial and post-colonial history is written into the fabric of the city. It's a shame that the tourists just skip it."

African cities are better connected these days because of airports in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar. Cheap flights to Nairobi are available from all important cities. This has led to a significant increase in their revenues earned from tourism.

Nairobi Attractions

There is a whole lot of things to do in Nairobi; national parks, safaris, museum, shopping, heritage walks, sailing, an opportunity to gorge on a variety of delectable cuisines and so much more to keep the tourists entertained throughout.

Nairobi National Park: At a distance of only 7 km from the city centre, this is a much loved retreat from city life, so close to nature. The park is home to a range of wildlife including rhinos, spot lions, gazelles, warthogs, cheetahs, zebras, buffaloes and giraffes. There is also a number of bird species found here.

David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust: Founded in 1977, this Trust has been established as an orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation centre. It is a must-see for animal lovers where young abandoned elephants and rhinos are taken care of with an aim to restore their health and then release them back into the wild.

Other attractions of the city are: Giraffe Centre, Nairobi National Museum, Karen Blixen Museum, Bomas of Kenya and Kenyatta International Conference Centre

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Nairobi is during January to February and between June to September. Average temperature during this period remains around 25 degree Celsius, making it an ideal time to visit the place. As most of Nairobi and its neighboring areas are witnessed in the national parks, sightseeing and outdoor activities, it is imperative to consider the weather conditions before planning a trip.

The rest of the year remains wet with rainfall. The months from March to May have heavy rains whereas the period between October to December experiences shorter ones. The road conditions during rains make it difficult to commute and move around.

Tickets to Nairobi are available at attractive rates. Travelers can book their cheap flight to Nairobi  from UK to explore its fantastic wildlife along with several other attractions of the city.
