York Prep Remarks on Surge in College Applications

Penn State has experienced an increase in application and acceptance rates. York Prep, a Manhattan-based school, asserts that the surge in applications is due not to the attention the university got from the controversy.

CBS reports that Penn State University has increased its acceptance by six percent. Likewise, applications for admission to the baccalaureate program also increased, these by two percent. Although the school's official position regarding the recent Sandusky scandal is to move on and continue to provide a superior academic opportunity to the next generation of students, many people wonder whether or not the surge in applications and acceptance letters is due to the press the university garnered over the course of the scandal. York Prep , a preparatory school in Manhattan, remarks that this increase in interested students is not, in fact, due to the recent press, but rather it is due to tight economic circumstances.

"Application and acceptance levels to state schools, including Penn State, are up because of the economy," explains Jayme Stewart, co-founder of York Prep and author of How to Get Into the College of Your Choice. "It has little to do with the scandal at Penn State and much to do with the fact that public schools offer a better value in a down economy than private schools. Simply put, less people can pay for a private education in today's economic landscape."

The economy has certainly put limits on the amount of spending that parents and their students can afford. Stewart asserts that many students, and their parents, question whether private schools are worth the investment in a limited financial situation. Public schools may not hold the prestige of private educational institutions, but they oftentimes offer a comparable level of education at a much more affordable price.

"When the economy is difficult, more students apply to state schools, which are great bargains for in-state pupils," states Stewart. "Take, for example, the public university system of New
York-SUNY. SUNY schools have also experienced an increase in application and acceptance rates. These universities provide a fine education at a great value. Why not save the money for graduate school, when loans and grants may be more difficult to secure?"
