William Rini of a Taste of Excellence Catering Highlights the Importance of Locally Sourced Produce

Local foods create community and knowing where your food comes from connects you to the people who raised, grew or produced it.

That's according to William Rini, a keen advocate for local produce, and owner of A Taste of Excellence Catering, based in Strongsville, Ohio. "This simply isn't the case with most supermarkets and other large, national or international suppliers," he adds.

"Today," Rini suggests, "people know their wines, they know fine food, and as a result, they're looking for more locally produced goods. That's why, at A Taste of Excellence Catering, whatever we can source locally, we use."

The luxury catering company owner goes on to explain that the business uses Ohio Proud beef and serves Ohio City Pasta, Lucky Penny Creamery products, and Mitchell's Ice Cream alongside dozens of other locally produced goods.

Recent figures reveal that in the U.S., the food supply and agriculture industries are set to deliver more than $3 trillion in annual economic activity within the next two years. "What's more," Rini points out, "the $3 trillion figure is representative just of the nation's retail grocery sector."

He continues, "When you factor in the restaurant trade, catering companies, or other smaller independent businesses, the true value of agriculture and produce in this country, particularly to local economies, is somewhat higher."

William Rini suggests that while the scale of production required to reach the multi-trillion dollar figure is good for the broader economy, it's bad for local industries, as well as the environment. "Very little of what's produced for the national grocery market stays in the area," the catering boss explains. "Instead, it's produced on a vast scale at large regional facilities, before being shipped across the U.S. and overseas."

Public perception appears to be trending toward a similar, shared opinion. "Over a quarter of Americans now prefer local brands and businesses to larger national or international alternatives," says Rini, referencing a recent study undertaken by market research and business intelligence portal Statista.

Of those polled by the organization and found to share Rini's attitude toward local food and drink, the overwhelming majority suggested that local producers offered a more positive buying experience, delivering better quality and superior value for money.

"At A Taste of Excellence Catering, we're here to deliver the levels of quality and service highlighted in the Statista study," explains Rini. "We're able to do this by dealing with local producers and suppliers which is something our client base certainly seems to appreciate."

"Furthermore," he concludes, "by dealing with other local businesses we're supporting the area, protecting the environment, and in doing so, we're often saving our customers money at the same time. It's a win-win situation."
