Wiley-Blackwell and The Cochrane Collaboration Extend Publishing Partnership in India
Online, January 10, 2010 (Newswire.com) - New Delhi, India, January 11, 2010 - Indian residents will continue to have complimentary access to reliable, up-to-date, evidence-based health research from The Cochrane Library, thanks to the National Provision provided by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
Wiley-Blackwell, the scientific, technical, medical and scholarly publishing business of John Wiley & Sons, Inc (NYSE: JWa), (NYSE: JWb) today announced that The Cochrane Collaboration will be renewing its license with India. Representatives of Wiley-Blackwell and the Indian Council of Medical Research will meet on Jan 27th to formalize the modalities of this arrangement. This national license will enable some 60 million internet users access to The Cochrane Library's internationally renowned collection of healthcare databases, including gold-standard Cochrane Systematic Reviews, which help clinicians and consumers make decisions about what treatments are best for their patients.
"The Cochrane Library is a comprehensive resource at the cutting-edge of evidence-based medicine, which helps practitioners and patients worldwide understand treatment options. We hope that this agreement will enable us to do even greater work in India and produce greater quantities of quality reviews." said Deborah Pentesco-Gilbert, Associate Editorial Director and Publisher for The Cochrane Library at Wiley-Blackwell.
"We are so pleased to note that one of the top 10 most accessed papers in 2008 is authored by Indian contributors* - evidence of The Cochrane Library's role in furthering the global reach and international profile of medical research in India."
Professor Prathap Tharyan from the Professor BV Moses & ICMR Centre for Advanced Research and Training in Evidence-Informed Healthcare at the Christian Medical College, Vellore added, "This agreement is a meeting of minds over the need to invest in reliable evidence in order to inform efforts to improve health outcomes, and an example of responsible leadership in health. The resources in The Cochrane Library have the potential to bring Evidence-Based Medicine to the forefront of medical practice in India. We have seen an increasing number of Indian researchers contributing to Cochrane reviews in the past years, and an increasing number of people from all walks of life in India using the The Cochrane Library. We hope that this trend will help raise the quality of research and health outcomes in India."
