Western Returned Scholars Association Honors Stan Barer Of Garvey Schubert Barer With Lifetime Achievement Award
Online, December 6, 2011 (Newswire.com) - The Western Returned Scholars Association honored Stan Barer with the Lifetime Achievement Award in a ceremony on Dec. 4 in the People's Republic of China. A member of Garvey Schubert Barer's advisory committee and of counsel, Barer is also the chairman emeritus of Saltchuk Resources, Inc.
Barer negotiated the resumption of the shipping service between the People's Republic of China and the U.S. in 1979. He is particularly knowledgeable about the U.S. political process and the determination of U.S. trade policy. Barer also has extensive experience analyzing legislative and regulatory issues related to maritime business and labor matters, including coastwise and intercoastal trade, relationships between subsidized and unsubsidized carriers, cargo preference laws, federal assistance for ship financing and regulation of government-owned carriers.
Barer is a member of the executive committee of the board for the Washington Council on International Trade and is a co-founder and past president of the Washington State China Relations Council. He also served as chairman of the subcommittee on Aviation and Maritime Law for the National Council for U.S.-China Trade and as counsel to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations Conference on the World Environment. Barer earned his J.D., Order of the Coif, from the University of Washington School of Law (1963) and his B.A. in economics and political science from the University of Washington (1961).
