The Williamson Cup was established in 1964 by A. Fred Williamson, in memory of his father, one of the original founders of the famed Winged Foot Golf Club and a long-time member of the USGA Executive Committee. The inaugural event was held at Winged Foot, and was contested by the four charter Williamson Cup Association Members from Metropolitan New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Buffalo. The Inaugural event was won by Washington (see attached).
In 2010 the WMGA team of Keegan Boone, Bart George, Denny McCarthy and Jordan Sweet won the event with a record score of 31 under par at the Essex Golf & Country Club in Ontario, Canada. Denny McCarthy won Individual Medalist (his second) with a record setting score of 128 (16 under par).
The Williamson Cup competition focuses not only on score but also on formal discipline, strict adherence to the Rules of Golf and complete compliance with the traditional etiquette and courtesies of the game. The low three scores of the four-man team for each round will be counted. If there is a playoff, all four players' scores will count. Most importantly, the Williamson Cup is a family affair. Players are houseguests of host club members. Social activities away from the golf club are chaperoned by those hosts. Family activities are designed to be the core of the experience for all contestants. As a result, long lasting national and international friendships have developed over the years between Williamson Cup players and host families.
