Volunteers Shoot For Healthy Communities Without Drugs
Online, July 1, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Vancouver, B.C. volunteers participated in a worldwide global strike against drugs over the weekend by getting thousands of Truth About Drugs educational booklets into the hands of local residents. Similar events were held across Canada in Toronto, Montreal and Quebec.
This year's massive global drug education blitz is part of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World drug prevention campaign to mark the United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Taking the UN message of "Global Action for Healthy Communities without Drugs", volunteers handed out booklets from Mission, B.C. to west-side Vancouver, and had young and old sign a pledge to be drug-free.
"The most powerful weapon is education," said Susan Kerr, a local representative for the campaign "Today, the problems of drugs hit us wherever we turn, but the Truth About Drugs materials cut through the hype and lies kids hear about drugs from their peers and the drug-pushers."
"The booklets and DVD provide a lot of information in a concise way," said Kerr. "It is factual and hard-hitting and tells why people take drugs, how drugs work and the short- and long-term effects of the most commonly abused drugs. This is information people need."
Throughout a worldwide network of volunteers, 56 million educational handouts have been distributed, tens of thousands of drug awareness events have been held in some 120 countries and Truth About Drugs public service announcement have been aired on 275 television stations. These materials and activities have helped people around the world learn about the destructive side effects of drugs and thereby make the decision for themselves to not use them.
