The nonprofit organization Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals (VAREP) will be hosting a free VA housing summit this Saturday, April 21, that will educate veterans, reservists and military families on financial assistance programs that can lower their housing costs.

Close to 250,000 veterans throughout San Diego are eligible for local and federal programs that can save them money on housing, energy costs, insurance and property taxes. San Diego County has the third-largest number of veterans in the U.S.

Most veterans and active duty members aren't aware of these VA programs that will lower their housing costs. That's the purpose of our VA Summit - to educate veterans, reservists and our military families. We will have VA experts available to answer any personal questions based on their situation.

VAREP, which is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, recently helped a 26-year-old disabled Marine in El Cajon eliminate her property taxes and mortgage insurance, saving her hundreds of dollars every month. Saturday's VA Summit hopes to help other veterans in similar situations.

Under the VA loan program, veterans don't have to buy private mortgage insurance (PMI), which can cost several hundred dollars a month. Disabled veterans, depending on their disability class, may not have to pay property taxes. The VA loan program also has refinancing options to help homeowners make their home more energy efficient.

San Diego County and the State of California also have financial assistance programs to help veterans with housing. Saturday's VA Summit will educate veterans on all of these programs.

“Most veterans and active duty members aren't aware of these VA programs that will lower their housing costs. That's the purpose of our VA Summit - to educate veterans, reservists and our military families,” said Andre Hobbs, San Diego chapter president for VAREP. "We will have VA experts available to answer any personal questions based on their situation."

VA Housing Summit Educates Veterans on VA Programs

Most veterans who attend Saturday's VA Summit will leave with a Certificate of Eligibility - the first step required in qualifying for VA benefits.

VAREP is a non-profit, 501(c)3 devoted to increasing homeownership among veterans, financial-literacy education, VA loan awareness and economic opportunity for the active military and veteran communities. The nonprofit has chapters across the country that educate the community on the entire VA housing process.
