UCSD Student-Driven Startup ionboard Plans to Disrupt the Electric Skateboard Industry

Along with co-founders Kate Xu, Chris Kowynia, and Steve Warburton, founders Dongpeng Li and Jack Craig set out to understand why electric longboards are so expensive. After researching technology such as motors and lithium-ion batteries, the ionboard team learned that prices for electric skateboards like Boosted Board are higher than they need to be. "We believe that lack of competition has kept prices high," says Jack Craig. The base model, ionboard, is fast and reliable with a top speed of 22 miles per hour, and a battery capacity that allows for 12-miles of range. The board can carry riders up a 20 percent grade, making it great for going up hills, and carrying the board is simple with an integrated handle. Inspired by classic longboards, the maple and bamboo deck creates a smooth riding experience.
