US Expert In Lecture Programme For CO Awareness Week

Dr David Penney of Carbon Monoxide Kills is visiting the UK to offer his expertise and advice in a programme of lectures

Marking the launch of Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Week in the UK on 21st November, Dr David Penney of Carbon Monoxide Kills will be in the UK to pass on his knowledge to organizations within Britain. Based in the USA, Dr Penney is resident doctor for this campaigning organisation and provides regular online advice at carbonmonoxidekills.com. His first port of call will be at the House of Lords for the start of the CO Awareness Week.

Following this event, Dr Penney will be joined by CO Kills founder Rob Aiers for a brief lecture tour. This will include University College London with Dr Ben Croxford, who has done notable work on testing houses in the UK for carbon monoxide with some startling results. Rob and David then continue their programme with visits to the Environment Protection Agency and Breakspeare Hospital.

Rob Aiers explained that to wage a war on the dangers of carbon monoxide it was essential to know more about the numbers of people affected. "We must share international data and new information about CO. Some countries are much better than others at collating figures but more importantly at having protocols in place for a carbon monoxide incident. In the USA you just call 911 if there is a suspected leak. The fire service will check for ambient carbon monoxide and call out the gas company who will red tag or shut off the device. The French check bodies for poisons including carbon monoxide and therefore has a reasonable handle on how many people die each year from carbon monoxide.

"The UK has no transparent protocol for an incident, so the general public has no clue about what to do. They also do not routinely check for poisons. It is therefore vital that we exchange information and Dr David Penney's expertise will help to bolster understanding of this hazard among UK citizens."

CO Awareness week is now in its fourth year in the UK, for which CO campaigner Lynn Griffiths is to be applauded.
