URGENT APPEAL FOR DONATIONS TO END SUFFERING IN HAITI

The Canadian Government will match eligible donations made to the Canadian Committee for United Nations Fund for Women (UNIFEM) by individual Canadians until February 12th, 2010

The Canadian National Committee for UNIFEM applauds the Canadian Government for stepping up and matching all donations made by individual Canadians to UNIFEM Canada until 12 February 2010.

This three day window means Canadian citizens can donate now so UNIFEM can supply urgently needed services to protect women and their families, and specifically rebuild women's shelters and expand the provision of emergency services for women.

Almas Jiwani, President of Canadian National Committee for UNIFEM issued a nationwide plea for assistance today, "For all those suffering and filled with anguish, I appeal to you to make a tax-deductible donation to help our sisters in Haiti."

In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) has issued a call for close to US$2 million to provide urgently needed shelters and services for the protection of women and their families. It is now estimated that over 200,000 people have died as a result of the catastrophic earthquake. There's no electricity, water, food, medical care, shelter all in short supply or missing altogether.
