Upcoming Months Could See More Dangerous Boating Conditions: Maritime Documentation
As Summer Becomes Fall, Boating Fatality Risk Rises, By The Numbers.
LOS ANGELES, September 16, 2019 (Newswire.com) - The Maritime Documentation Center, a company that provides an online portal for vessel owners to register and renew boat registration, also strongly recommends boating safely at all times. Recent statistics have shown that the incidences of deadly recreational boating accidents fall during the summer and rise during the autumn and winter months.
The U.S. Coast Guard compiles statistics on recreational boating accidents annually. The 2018 study of reported accidents found that October, November, December, and January had a higher percentage of accidents that are fatal by month than June, July, August, or September.
While there were fewer accidents in October, November, December and January than June, July, August and September, the fall and winter accidents were far more likely to result in a fatality. This could be due to the colder temperatures. According to the National Weather Service, “roughly 20% of those who fall into cold water die in the first minute of immersion due to cold water shock.”
“Boating safely is crucial at any time of the year, but even more so during the fall and winter months. What might be merely a small accident can quickly become a dangerous, or even deadly, situation. Even the best swimmers lose muscle control rapidly in cold water. Wearing a life jacket is important, but obeying boating safety rules is always important.
