Tsunami Dog Lost At Sea Re-United With Family

A real story of survival. Family dog washed out to sea during the March 2011 Japanese tsunami is re-united with the family three weeks later.

For dog and pet lovers, this has to be one of the most powerful stories coming out of Japan.

I've been following this story on the news and had to share it. A family dog is swept out to sea during the March 11, 2011 tsunami is found floating in debris three weeks later by a helicopter rescue crew.

A dog rescued from the roof of a house which was swept out to sea by the Japanese tsunami has been reunited with her owner.

The two-year-old dog survived for three weeks on the house, which was drifting nearly 2km from the shore off Kesennuma, in the Miyagi prefecture.

Coastguards flying over the area hunting for survivors spotted the dog on the roof of the house last Friday.

The aerial view was broadcast repeatedly on television, as was footage of the ensuing rescue, with the dog being fed and hugged by coastguards afterwards.

Her owner recognized the dog on the TV and alerted the authorities.

The woman, whose name was not given, was reunited with her beloved family pet yesterday. She said: "I saw the rescue on the news, and knew it was her. I knew her right away, from her face."

Japan was devastated by the tsunami on March 11.
