Holding 12.5 kilogrammes of maize meal each, the bags add up to a massive 7 500 tonnes, enough to support 6 250 people for a year. The initiative is particularly useful at a time when maize prices are skyrocketing due to continuing drought across large areas of the country. With 8 million tonnes of maize being produced each year, the South African maize industry is the largest in South Africa by a long way, making it a vital food staple for millions of people.

“With maize prices going up by 40%, we are extremely excited to be able to contribute to fighting hunger in South Africa at a time when the country needs it most. This is one of our biggest and most important projects. Our vision is not just personal interest, but also to better the lives of thousands of South Africans,” says Trunel Bags founder Christo Nel.

The bags are woven from strong polypropelene which is far sturdier than plastic, while they are also easier to transport and can be reused. Plastic lining is placed inside the bag to ensure that it is sealed from any water and other possible contaminants. The bags will be printed with the South African flag to show Trunel’s proudly South African attitude.

“We are now just waiting for financing from government in order to start the manufacturing process and get the ball rolling,” Nel explains.

In addition to this charitable project, Trunel Bags recently distributed 1 tonne bulk bags for the chrome industry, resulting in 170 tonnes of chrome being prepared for shipment, ready to contribute to South Africa’s economy.

In line with Trunel’s philosophy of “Your Business, Our Priority’ Nel says that Trunel Bags has expert technical staff who can adapt materials and sizes to the various needs of clients.

“We seek to make packaging easier to work with and best suited for the specific industry that the client is working in. We also ensure that they get the most cost effective solution to their packaging needs. We are proud of our services and strive to make people’s jobs easier,” Nel says.

Apart from being South Africa’s leading supplier of quality plastic and polypropelene bags, Trunel also specialises in plastic sheeting, knitted bags and pallet wraps, sold in bulk at warehouse prices.

The company has spent more than seven years in the business, and can cover applications ranging from perishable food transport, to general packaging, agriculture and milling.
