Travis Manion Foundation Kicks Off 17th Annual 9/11 Heroes Run Race Series

Starting this weekend, Travis Manion Foundation (TMF), one of the nation’s leading veteran service organizations, will launch its 17th annual 9/11 Heroes Run race series in 70 communities nationwide. The race series, sponsored nationally by USAA, marks the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by uniting communities to remember the lives lost that day and in the wars since and honoring the veterans, military service members, and first responders who serve our country and our communities.

The 9/11 Heroes Run 5K series was inspired by Marine 1st Lt Travis Manion, who was killed by a sniper in Iraq in April 2007 as he selflessly protected his battalion. Before his final deployment, Travis visited Rescue One in NYC—a group known for losing almost all its men on 9/11. Travis returned from this visit with a deeper understanding of his reasons for fighting in Iraq. At its heart, the 9/11 Heroes Run is a tribute to a personal commitment to never forget the heroes of that day.

“Each year on the anniversary of September 11, we pause to remember the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice on that day and those who lost their lives in the wars since,” said Ryan Manion, CEO, Travis Manion Foundation. “The growth of the 9/11 Heroes Run 5K series over the last 17 years demonstrates a shared commitment  in communities nationwide to never forget the sacrifices of first responders and military service members like my brother, Travis, and countless others. I’m inspired by the volunteers and participants who share Travis Manion Foundation’s dedication to run in memory of our heroes.”

Through 9/11 Heroes Runs around the world, Travis Manion Foundation invests back into the local race communities to support military service members, veterans, first responders and their families.

About Travis Manion Foundation: Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) is a community—led by veterans and families of the fallen but open to all—that serves together and supports each other. In 2007, 1stLt Travis Manion (USMC) was killed in Iraq while saving his wounded teammates. Today, Travis' legacy lives on in the words he spoke before leaving for his final deployment, "If Not Me, Then Who..." Guided by this mantra, veterans and families of the fallen are empowered to become leaders in their communities, develop strong relationships, and thrive in their post-military lives by serving as character role models to youth. As a result, communities prosper and the character of our nation’s heroes lives on in the next generation. For more information on the Foundation visit www.travismanion.org.
