Tourism Sector Bringing Many Changes in Mauritius

The number of tourists going to Mauritius is increasing every year and many of them are from Europe. To cater for this European market, Mauritius is seeing major developments across many sectors.

Online shopping in Mauritius has become increasingly popular now and although it is in its early stages, this trend is soon going to be adopted by many. Locals are embracing the western way of living and are buying more from the Internet. Security online has been a major drawback but investment in new technology has seen a positive effect. Food can be ordered online for those who fancy a lazy evening or fresh food delivery is now possible for those who do not wish to physically go to a store to buy what they need in the kitchen.

Restaurants are popping round every corner not only to cope with the high level of tourists but also to a growing Mauritian community who want a higher standard of living and not the normal cook-at-home tradition.

There are also a number of beauty salons and spas on the rise because people from abroad want to have quality time relaxing when they come on vacation. You cannot really blame them because if you were to go on holiday yourself, you would want to have the best time in the world. So a number of beauty treatments are being offered as well as different techniques for relaxation in an attempt to lure these foreigners.

What's sad in all this is that even though these tourists help in building the economy, a lot of things are being sacrificed in the process of making things better for tourists. For example, beaches are being transformed into more tourist friendly places with bars, sun lounges and bungalows everywhere. This is killing the natural beauty of the island and many locals are feeling strangers in their own country. Where once used to be rough natural paths leading to the beautiful beaches are now being replaced with man-made roads for better accessibility.

All these changes are happening so quickly and the people of Mauritius are now adopting a more westernise lifestyle and indulge themselves in activities which were once thought to be only for tourists. Although it is not a problem to respond to change and adapt accordingly, the problem here lies in the fact that an influx of tourists and a mindset to make money is catapulting massive changes in a short amount time leaving no time for a smooth transition and that leaves room for frustration.
