Topsy, a San Francisco based social media analytics company has announced it shutting down last week. One of the most popular and highly respected social search and analytics company, Topsy was founded in 2007 and by 2013 was acquired by Apple for more than $200 million.

The main reason for this step was the halting of Topsy's premium subscriptions to its services. Often refered as the Google for social media, the company's main focus was on analyzing data from Twitter, it could search, index and analyze tweets dating back to Twitter's very beginning in 2006. No wonder it was one of the very few certified Twitter partners.

As is very common with all the developments in Apple, this news too comes without any updates from Apple on its plans regarding Topsy's technology, though there are strong specualtions that the data from Topsy might be used by Apple to improve ots targeted-marketing strategy on iAds and search algorithms across the App Store, Siri, iTunes etc.

At present the homepage of Topsy redirects to Apple's support document on using Search on iOS.
