Leadership at Tier 1 Event Management, Inc. is cultivated through setting and achieving goals. Targets have been set for the New Year, and the Director discussed instilling specific behavioral qualities that great leaders exemplify.

“I don’t know how people achieve anything without first setting a goal for it, especially when it comes to running a business,” declared Lucia, the Director of Operations at Tier 1 Event Management, Inc. “The other leaders and I worked out our aims for 2016 well in advance, and I’m excited to implement them to keep our positive momentum from last year flowing.”

Lucia explained, “It takes a bit more creativity to develop measurable targets in certain areas, but it’s possible with a little effort.”

According to Lucia, any individual or team can set any type of objective by using the SMART acronym – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. “Often, goals fail to meet even the first requirement of the SMART system. Something like, ’We need more leaders,’ gets passed off as a goal. Really, what is anyone supposed to do with that?”

Instead, Tier 1 Event Management, Inc.’s Director suggests working methodically through the SMART technique of goal-setting, taking time to hit each step. For example, she recommends getting specific about the types of behaviors that leaders should exemplify, such as relationship building. “Networking is an activity that builds relationships, so a SMART goal that enhances the leadership skill of relationship building might look something like this: ‘All associates will grow their professional networks by 20 percent in the next six months.’ With some effort any desirable skill can be cultivated.”

Building a bigger network by cultivating professional relationships actually is one of the leadership goals being addressed at Tier 1 Event Management, Inc. in 2016. Others include developing a vision for the future, living by core values, and empowering oneself and others. “These all sound vague, but once the other leaders and I apply the SMART system to them, you can be sure we’ll have well-defined targets to shoot for in the New Year,” Lucia shared. “With this approach, the coming months will be the best yet!”
